Athens

Looking for the best Athens training base in Greece? In fact, Athens is the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games and home to the original Marathon course. Beyond the ancient ruins, the city offers real Olympic-grade infrastructure: a velodrome, an aquatic centre, and a coastline built for open-water swimming. So whether you’re chasing a marathon PR or training inside a former Olympic venue, therefore, Athens training delivers history and hardware in equal measure.

Running & Athletics

Athens is home to the Athens Authentic Marathon, which follows the original route run by the messenger Pheidippides in 490 BCE. In fact, the race starts in the town of Marathon and finishes at the Panathenaic Stadium, the venue of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Because the course climbs steadily between the 10th and 31st kilometers before dropping into the city, it’s considered one of the toughest marathon routes in the world. In addition, the surrounding hills offer year-round training terrain for distance runners building toward the race.

Triathlon & Swimming

The Vouliagmeni Olympic Centre hosted the triathlon and cycling time trial events at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In particular, its coastal location along the Athens Riviera still offers open-water swim training in calm, clear conditions. Because the water stays warm through much of the year, athletes can train swimming almost year round. So whether you’re building open-water confidence or brick training for a triathlon, this stretch of coastline delivers genuine Olympic pedigree.

Athens Olympic Sports Complex

Overall, the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, known locally as OAKA, remains one of Europe’s most complete multisport venues. It includes an Olympic velodrome, an aquatic centre, a tennis centre, and a 19,000-capacity indoor arena. In fact, all four have hosted athletes since the 2004 Games and remain in active use today. Because everything sits within one complex, therefore, athletes can train multiple disciplines without switching venues.

Football

Athens is home to some of Greece’s most established professional football clubs and modern training facilities. In addition, the city’s mix of youth academies and senior training grounds makes it a strong base for organized football camps. Because facilities stay active through Greece’s mild winters, teams can train outdoors nearly year round.

Excursions

Between training sessions, immerse yourself in the history that shaped both ancient and modern sport. Together, these stops showcase Athens as it's been for over two thousand years.

  • Walk the grounds of the Acropolis, still the defining symbol of ancient Athens. In fact, it's best visited early morning, before both the heat and the crowds set in.
  • Explore the marketplace and civic heart of ancient Athens, where democracy itself first took shape. So, it's a flat, low-impact walk that doubles as active recovery.
  • Wander Plaka's narrow, café-lined streets beneath the Acropolis. Overall, it's the easiest evening stop after a hard training day.
  • Browse one of the world's great collections of ancient Greek artifacts. Because it's fully indoor and shaded, it's a good midday break during summer training.
  • Drive south along the coast to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. In particular, sunset here is one of the most iconic views in Attica.
