Canary Islands

Canary Islands

Looking for the best Canary Islands training base in Spain? In fact, this volcanic archipelago off Africa’s coast offers mild, sunny weather every month of the year, a variety of terrains, and professional infrastructure across four major islands.

Because each island specializes in a different discipline, therefore, athletes can build an entire multisport program without ever leaving Spanish territory. Its combination of volcanic climbs, Atlantic coastline, and altitude training grounds makes it one of Europe’s top sports destinations.

Triathlon

Lanzarote is home to the IRONMAN Lanzarote, Europe’s oldest full-distance IRONMAN and widely considered its hardest. In fact, the course combines a 3.8km Atlantic swim, a 180km bike leg across volcanic lava fields, and a full marathon.

Beyond race day, athletes have access to Club La Santa, featuring three 50-metre pools, a saltwater lagoon, and a dedicated cycling centre. So whether you’re focusing on swim technique or brick sessions, therefore, the combination of professional infrastructure and volcanic terrain makes every session count

Cycling & Altitude Training

Tenerife’s Mount Teide rises to over 2,000 meters, making it one of Europe’s premier altitude training bases. In particular, Tour de France winners including Chris Froome, Primož Roglič, and Alberto Contador have all trained at the summit.

Because riders can drop from 2,000 meters to sea level in a single day, the island offers a variety of gradients suited to every training phase. As a result, UCI WorldTour teams now book training camps here years in advance.

Windsurfing & Watersports

Overall, Fuerteventura’s Sotavento Beach has hosted the Windsurf & Wingfoil World Cup every summer since 1986. In fact, the event now draws professional windsurfers, wingfoilers, and kitesurfers from across the globe each July and August.

Because the beach’s tidal lagoon stretches 4km long and stays shallow throughout, it suits complete beginners and world champions alike. So whether you’re learning to windsurf or training for competition, this is one of the most reliable wind venues on Earth.

Swimming & Open Water

In addition to Club La Santa’s pools on Lanzarote, the Canary Islands offer warm, calm Atlantic bays well suited to open-water training. Because water temperatures stay mild through winter, swimmers can train outdoors nearly year round.

In particular, the archipelago’s volcanic coastline creates naturally sheltered coves ideal for building open-water confidence before a triathlon. Our partner centers, therefore, provide full support and recovery facilities to keep you in peak condition.

Excursions

Between training sessions, immerse yourself in the volcanic history that shapes every island in this archipelago. Together, they showcase a landscape unlike anywhere else in Spain.

  • Walk or drive through Lanzarote's active volcanic landscape, where the ground still radiates heat from eruptions in the 1730s. In fact, it's one of the most striking volcanic parks in Europe.
  • Ride the cable car toward Spain's highest peak, then explore the lunar landscape of Las Cañadas below.
  • Visit Fuerteventura's famous windsurfing lagoon, calm enough for casual paddling outside competition season.
  • Hike the dramatic gorge trail down to this cliffside village in Tenerife's Teno mountains.
  • Visit vineyards planted directly into Lanzarote's volcanic ash, each vine sheltered by a small stone wall.
