Beyond the Training Grounds

Recovery is, after all, just as important as the effort, so we've curated experiences designed to help you recharge, explore, and return to your training with a fresh perspective.

  • Experience the restorative power of traditional Khmer massage, a deep-tissue technique that uses herbal compresses, stretching, and pressure-point therapy passed down through generations. Sessions focus on physical therapy, muscle recovery, and hydro-recovery treatments, so your body is ready for the next training block. You'll find it at wellness retreats in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and along the coast in Kep and Sihanoukville.
  • Start before dawn and walk the grounds of Angkor Archaeological Park as the sun rises behind Angkor Wat's central towers. Because it's slow and low-impact, this makes an ideal recovery day after a race or a hard training week. From there, the route typically continues on foot through Angkor Thom, the Bayon's carved stone faces, and the tree-swallowed ruins of Ta Prohm. It's best done from November to April, when skies are clear. Also, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress modestly, since temple sites require shoulders and knees to be covered.
  • Take a gentle boat cruise along the Mekong River or across Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Along the way, these slow-paced trips pass floating villages, stilted fishing communities, and flooded forests, with the chance to spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins near Kratie. Because it's an easy, seated activity, it still delivers a strong dose of local culture and scenery, and it's especially rewarding at sunset.
  • Visit a working Kampot pepper plantation and learn how this internationally recognized, protected-designation peppercorn is grown, harvested, and dried by hand. Afterward, tours are usually followed by a hands-on Khmer cooking class using fresh local ingredients, giving athletes a practical, flavorful way to refuel with balanced, home-cooked meals.
  • Explore Cambodia's food culture through guided market visits and tastings, such as fish amok steamed in banana leaf, fresh tropical fruit, grilled river fish, and rice-based dishes built for refueling. In particular, local markets and family-run restaurants in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Kampot offer nutrient-dense, athlete-friendly meals that make recovery days as satisfying as they are cultural.
